Evaluation of Integrated Wasteland Development Programme in Jaithari block in Shahdol District of Madhya Pradesh

Results and major findings

                                 i.            The PIA was multidisciplinary and well trained.

                             ii.            The UGs, SHGs and WTCGs were formed as per the norms and there was cohesiveness within the groups. There was a fair representation from all sections of the society.

                           iii.            There was a tremendous increase in the irrigated area in Kharif (about 27 %) and Rabi (about 193%) after watershed works.

                           iv.            There is 294% increase in biomass cover over the watershed area after treatment. There is 28274 times increase in water storage capacity and tremendous increase in ground water recharge within the milli watershed. Water is available in all well within the watershed area through out the year. Increase in productivity in both Kharif and Rabi is recorded.

                             v.            About 20 % target area was treated till Feb. 2002 due to frequent change of PO. However in the leadership of present PO the work was found to be good. The structures built across the nala for soil and moisture conservation were found to be very effective.

                           vi.            The Programme has helped in improving the socio economic status of the villagers. The farmers and labourers below poverty line got double benefit from the project as firstly they got wage employment within the village boundaries and secondly they could irrigate their land by impounding surface water as well as ground water.
