EVALUATION

Evaluation of Integrated Wasteland Development Project in Sehore District of Madhya Pradesh

Agency: Centre for Advanced Research and Development, Bhopal

Duration: 2002

Area:  Sehore

Sample: Out of 30 micro watersheds in two milli watersheds under IWDP 15 were selected for study. The financial verification was done for all 30 micro watersheds.

Results and major findings

                               i.            Due to frequent change in the project in charge the past records at Zila Panchayat were not properly maintained.

ii.            The overall awareness in the region is very high, which has resulted in active participation of the community in the planning process. However, high awareness level has its own drawbacks, as there was a fight between two groups in a micro watershed over the issue of presdentship.

iii.            Most of the progress was made in the last six months with regards to physical works. The selection of sites for water harvesting and soil conservation works was appropriate and technically sound.

iv.            Watershed committee has proper maintenance of records and their participation was high. Even the women were very enthusiastic about watershed activities.

                              v.            There is lack of community organisation initiatives on part of PIA.

vi.            Training component was also ignored by PIA. No training had been imparted to the community about technical details of various watershed works or conceptual framework of the project.

vii.            The SHGs and UGs though existed were not aware of the concept behind their formation or the activities they were supposed to undertake.

viii.     The project seriously lacked in the areas of community organisation and training.
