EVALUATION

Evaluation of Chopan mili watershed under Integrated Wasteland Development Programme in Guna District of Madhya Pradesh

Agency: ARANYA, Bhopal

Duration: March 2002

Area: Guna

Sample: 11 out of 14 micro watersheds

Results and major findings

                               i.            In terms of empowerment, there has been a definite change in the attitude of the beneficiaries, especially those belonging to the vulnerable groups such as ST, SC and OBC.

ii.            The women's groups were very articulate in expressing their issues and demands. They had started participating in the decision-making processes related to agriculture etc.

iii.            In terms of generation of wage employment the project has not been able to create any significant effect. This is mainly on account of the existing wage employment opportunities with the NFL. Infact, as a result of attractive wage rates available with the NFL the PIA had to resort machinery to create structures such as ponds, tanks etc on account of non-availability of labourers.

iv.            The area under Rabi crop has increased in the watershed villages to 52 %. Even far better is the increase in irrigated agricultural land. The area under irrigation in the entire project area has increased by 100 %. In the field of agriculture other significant interventions are those of vermiculture and NADEP.

                              v.            Trainings organized for the watershed committee was limited only to the initial orientation training. There has been no follow up trainings for the watershed committee office bearers and members.
